I so appreciate your writing and stunning photography, Jo. I feel like I picked up some of these pieces during our time together, but the blog is really helping me hold it all together in my head. When we were in Sinop, especially, I was keenly aware of the war raging to the north, and found myself wondering how it has disrupted supply and cultural exchanges. I also wondered about climate and other ecological change are affecting food and culture here: is this why we had red mullet instead of anchovies?

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I’m really grateful it resonated and helped convey a bit of what we experienced! As for the anchovies and red mullet question, I can’t say for certain, but I imagine the reduction in supply is (in addition to the phytoplankton blooms) likely connected to the conflict surrounding the Black Sea and poor management of the waterways.

It was especially interesting that we couldn’t find anchovies in Sinop. I’ve heard that many fishermen sell their catch to Istanbul, where they can get higher prices. That would make sense, since I saw quite a few Black Sea anchovies in the markets there during our visit. That’s just a guess though, and I’m not completely sure.

Hope you are doing well!
